Project O2 is an innovative ecological restoration service that combines drone technology, our own developed seed balls (SeedBombs), and a scientific approach to species selection. Unlike traditional manual planting or seeding, our system includes recipe development, precise application, and long-term field monitoring of success.
Seeding enables in-situ plant development directly from seed, resulting in a naturally formed root system without the deformations typical of nursery cultivation. Drones additionally enable fast and precise action on terrains that are difficult to access or operationally expensive — steep slopes, fire-damaged areas, and degraded surfaces. In practice, this method significantly increases operational efficiency and enables interventions where traditional planting is often not feasible.
A SeedBomb is a carefully designed seed ball containing seed, substrate, clay, Croatian wool, and additives that improve germination conditions. The protective shell with natural repellents significantly reduces predation by mice, snails, and birds. The recipe is developed depending on location, soil type, and climatic conditions, with the goal of imitating and optimizing natural regeneration processes.
Species selection is based on ecological suitability and restoration goals. We use a combination of pioneer species (for soil stabilization and preparation) and climax species (for long-term ecosystem stability). The emphasis is on locally adapted native species with the goal of increasing biodiversity and system resilience, not on monocultures.
Each location undergoes expert assessment before the start of the project. We analyze soil structure and type, slope and exposure, existing vegetation, and climatic conditions. Based on this, we decide whether additional preparation or strategy adjustment is needed. In some cases (e.g., dense invasive vegetation), the approach is modified to increase success.
The minimum area for drone seeding is around 1 hectare, while optimal efficiency is achieved on larger areas. In a single region, we ideally combine multiple locations for maximum flight efficiency.
Seeding time depends on species, climatic zone, and field conditions. The optimal period in most cases includes late autumn, winter, and early spring, when moisture availability is greater and conditions favor natural stratification and germination. Mediterranean areas — seeding is carried out earlier (autumn/winter) so that plants can use moisture before summer droughts. Continental areas — late autumn and early spring. Mountainous areas — seeding can be extended into spring due to lower temperatures. Planning is done in advance to align species' biological cycles with optimal field conditions.
Success depends on a number of factors such as micro-location conditions, weather, and species selection. Our approach is not based on uniform distribution but on understanding terrain heterogeneity and optimizing micro-locations, which increases overall efficiency and system resilience.
Monitoring is a key part of our approach. We use imaging with the latest cameras (RGB, multispectral, and LiDAR), vegetation development analysis, and long-term succession monitoring. We provide clients with structured reports showing vegetation development and project effects over time.
We use certified seed of known origin, adapted to local conditions. When selecting, we consider ecological suitability, genetic origin, and availability of planting material. The goal in seed selection is to ensure long-term stability and resilience of the future ecosystem.
Cost depends on location size, terrain accessibility, type of intervention, and project goals. Generally, we are 5x cheaper than traditional seedling planting because we don't need nurseries or large labor forces. For B2G projects, we offer a per-hectare pricing model adapted to public procurement.
