Fire resilience begins before the flames — and continues long after: Project O2 at the Croatian Firefighting Association conference

At the HVZ's 16th International Autumn Professional Conference in Vučevica, we made the case that restoring burned forests is part of the firefighting story.
Fire resilience begins before the flames — and continues long after: Project O2 at the Croatian Firefighting Association conference

Fires don't end when the flames are out. That was Project O2's message at the 16th International Autumn Professional Conference of the Croatian Firefighting Association (HVZ) in Vučevica, where Project O2 was represented by Domina Delač, alongside firefighters and experts from Croatia and abroad.

„Fire resilience begins long before a fire breaks out and continues long after it has been extinguished.” Prevention and fast response are essential — but what's left after a fire, the burned and degraded land, is just as much part of the story. That's where restoration comes in.

Project O2 restores burned and degraded terrain with drones — spreading SeedBombs and planting climate-resilient, native species on ground that's hard to reach by traditional means. Restoration comes with long-term monitoring, because a forest that grows back has to be more resilient than the one the fire took.

The Mediterranean and the whole region lose more forest every year to longer, fiercer fire seasons. We see post-fire restoration as the natural continuation of firefighting work — and we look forward to working with everyone building fire resilience from prevention to replanting. 💚
